Red Dead Redemption 2 is coming to PC
It’s been a very long wait, but I’m really glad to hear that Read Dead Redemption 2 is finally coming to the PC. Ever since I got a taste of the game on Xbox One, I’ve really been wanting to play it again.
Rockstar plans on a November 5 release, just in time for the holidays!
Rockstar also said that the PC version will have “a range of graphical and technical enhancements for increased immersion along with new Bounty Hunting Missions, Gang Hideouts, Weapons and more.” They did stuff like this back when they were making GTA V for the PC, so it’s nice to see that they weren’t just porting everything over as is. The PC release will also include Red Dead Online, the multiplayer version of the game.
Buying the game is going to be a little different. On October 9th, the game will be available for preorder through the new Rockstar Games Launcher, and it comes with a few perks if you choose to buy through Rockstar.
If you preorder Red Dead Redemption 2 before October 22, you can get a free upgrade to the Premium Edition of the game, or save $20 on the Special and Ultimate Editions. As as added bonus, players will be able to pick two of the following games to get for free with their pre-order:
- Grand Theft Auto III
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
- Bully: Scholarship Edition
- L.A. Noire: The Complete Edition
- Max Payne 3: The Complete Edition
The Rockstar Games Launcher is a very new platform that was released, so some free games is a good idea for getting players to try out Rockstar’s own digital retail platform.
At launch, the game will also be available via the Epic Games Store, Greenman Gaming, the Humble Store, GameStop, and a few more digital retailers, with preorders starting on October 23rd.
Now, if you are looking to expand your Steam library, you will have to wait a little bit longer. Red Dead Redemption 2 will launch on Steam some time in December. I wasn’t able to confirm an exact date, but I imagine it won’t be long before we get a release date.
The game will also be a launch title on the new Google Stadia streaming service, so if you were planning on trying out something new, this may be of interest to you. Google Stadia is planned to come out some time in November as well.
What is Red Dead Redemption 2?
For those who don’t already know, this game is an open-world, action adventure game set in the days of the old West. Despite being a sequel, the story actually takes place in the past, before the events of the first game that came out in 2010. In this game, you play as Arthur Morgan, an outlaw who rides in a gang, committing train robberies, heists, and trying to stay one step ahead of the law.
Red Dead Redemption 2 originally launched on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in October, last year, and has gone on to become a massive success, both getting awesome reviews and lots of revenue for Rockstar. The fact that this game is coming out for the PC is particularly noteworthy, because the first Red Dead Redemption, which came out on consoles years ago, never actually came to the PC. One of the supposed reasons was how bugged the game was at launch.
My Thoughts:
When Rockstar first launched its new game launcher, I couldn’t help but think that, at some point in the future, this could be used to play future titles; why not Red Dead Redemption 2 as well? With the timing of it being launched, it just felt like something was going on behind the closed doors at Rockstar. And sure enough, my thoughts were confirmed.
To be honest, we’re all probably not surprised. With Rockstar’s track record of highly successful games, it makes sense for the company to release it on as many platforms as possible, PC included. More revenue.
Personally, I’m very excited to play this game after only getting a small taste. When I first played, I only got to play through the prologue. Even then, that was a very long play session; I mostly played through the main story, skipping who knows how many side missions that may have been available. At one point after the prologue, the entire open world becomes available for you to explore.
It goes without saying that a PC release means that we will have a lot more graphical enhancements. Not that the game looked bad on Xbox or PlayStation, but big, beefy PC rigs will get to further make their game look great.
It does seem like its going to be a crazy mess of digital retailers to choose from. Personally, I’m okay with waiting until it comes out on Steam, but I may consider trying it out on the Rockstar Launcher. I’ve never had any qualms over waiting for a game to release, and I won’t this time either. Games like this are worth waiting for, and it’s unfortunate that many folks are still up in arms about platform exclusivity.
I’ve always liked to envision the many digital distribution services as if they were “consoles”; just another way to play games. Some games are exclusive to one platform, while others are found on many different platforms. To me, it just feels like comparing Xboxes and PlayStations. Sure, you may have to click on a different icon to start up your game, but once you are playing, does it really matter?
